Afternoon all and greetings from Tasmania.
Just giving everyone an update on the state of Fly in Tasmania. Some would be aware that I attended the Batemans Bay Nationals and returned to Tassie all enthusiastic to get Fly going at my club, Blue Hills Sporting Shooters Club. We had considerable development to undertake before Fly was a possibility and COVID then put a serious spanner in the works.
Our club is on the Tasman Peninsula about 30 minutes south from Hobart and 10-15 mins from the beach side areas of Primrose Sands and Dodges Ferry.
I am the Tas Fly delegate again and it is my intention to attend the meeting at Little River with hopefully two other shooters.
COVID and its associated restrictions stopped any range development and it is only in the last year that we have been able to start addressing range upgrades that would enable us to start shooting Fly seriously.
To date we have replaced all benchtops and now have a 14 bench firing line. The intention is to expand this to 20 in the near future.
Benchrest disciplines had lapsed esp IRB when the discipline captain relocated to NSW.
We have resurrected Benchrest Rimfire (50m/100m) and this group will most likely make the transition to 200yd Fly. The post and frame line at 200yds is almost ready and we should be shooting Rimfire Fly within the next couple of months. At this stage we have between 10-14 shooters attending International Rimfire Benchrest and the enthusiasm for this shoot is growing.
I have started off 300m CF Fly event so that we can take folks along the CF Fly path. This has been an interesting journey as most shooters are using factory rifles and had no experience target shooting at any distance.
Shooters are progressing and hopefully the transition to 500m isn’t far away.
Our aim is to have all Fly shoots (factory 300, 500m and 200yd Rimfire) fully functioning by the end of the year. One objective is to have a State title as soon as we feel able to run it and I will work closely with Dave Groves on this to ensure we don't have any clashes with other State events.
You may also be interested to know that our State SSAA is in the process of developing a State Range. Clubhouse is up and range development for a range of disciplines is underway including a 31 bench firing line.
Happy to answer any questions you may have and look forward to catching at Eagle Park.

Dave Moult

Very exciting Dave ! I agree that the 500M can and is very difficult for newcomers to the sport . In Brisbane we started a 300m fly which was an instant success ! What fly targets do u use at the 300M ? We use a target thats 3/5th size of the 500m target and has the splash plate built in . I can send you a pic if you want ?
The rimfire is just so popular anywhere it's shot !
I will see you at the Nationals , good luck in TASSIE , and I am in once you are ready to go !
