We came from far and wide, to try our luck at hitting a Fly.

Branch members from Brisbane, Gladstone, Mackay and Springsure joined SSAA Innisfail local Fly shooters at the Murdering Point range at Kurrimine Beach in Tropical North Qld (WHAT A PLACE TO SHOOT!)

With a catch-up Friday evening seaside at the King Reef Hotel for dinner and drinks done. Saturday morning at the range presented us with overcast conditions and a SE wind.

Signed in, bench draw done, gear setup, flags out. Colin called commence fire.
Great conditions, wind… but not enough mirage to effect seeing shots… YET! Vince V opened with a cracker. The 300wsm showing why Vv likes the big bangers.
But as the day went on, the cloud cleared… the locals smiled and said, “welcome to the tropics”.

Great to see a variety of gear from old school early 1900’s rifle from the CSD style discipline to .223 modern hunting machines and full custom Fly rifles across the benches. All were present and very much enjoying the day.

As we came to E card for CF, Shane had started to eat into Vv’s lead… with just 6 points separating 1st and 2nd… Vv had to hold his nerve in total mirage blackout… no visual of the big 30 cal holes on target.
As it turns out Shane read the mirage just a bit better on the last card. Managing to grab just enough points to put Vv back into second place. Jeff M had been quietly moving along in the background to take out 3rdplace.

We paused for lunch, with the SSAA Innisfail branch putting on a dead set awesome BBQ lunch…
While lunch was being cooked, we tried our hand at “Blackjack shoot” if you are not sure what that is, google “Cortina blackjack”. We shot this as per our fly bench setup.
Shane managed to rattle the rack enough to win this fun side event, all 6 targets went down and the 2” plate spun around another 3 times giving a total score of 84 points. Chris P came second showing no mercy, all 6 plates got hit and the 2” another 2 times after that, 63 points for him. Jeff M, Vv and Darren W managed 5 of the 6 plates… that little 2” one managed to avoid them.

On to RF, and the breeze was now a washing machine effect, and the mirage made seeing your sighters on the white A3 paper near impossible. That didn’t worry Chris P! Nope not a problem… with a 259.07 in some rugged conditions. Very well-done Chris P!

Now there was a shooter having her very first RF match, Tracey H… not surprising to see her battle with Vv for 2nd and 3rd, we anticipated this would happen. Right up to the last cards of the day. Def next time Tracy… def next time.

Shane C had managed to just quietly accumulate enough points to snag 2nd in RF, once again in the back end of the match he put a nice card or 2 together to just sneak ahead of Vv and Tracey.

With the events done, Vv did the presentations. And sadly, that meant packing up and preparing to head back down the coast for another week of work.

To SSAA Innisfail. Colin, Wes, Ash, Darren, John, Tracey, Heath and any others I have accidently left out. … Thank you so much for the effort you put into the weekend. The weekend was very enjoyable and by all accounts we would all love to come back again to shoot fly at Kurrimine beach... and encourage as many others as we can to come to this magical part of Australia to shoot.
