Rifle hard cases

Just wondering what hard cases folks are using to transport Fly rifles?  Coming from Tassie we will use the boat mostly and from past experience I have moved to Pelican cases for my hunting rifles. Fairly crude cages on the boat and all rifles get lumped together so best protection is a hard case.

The Fly rifles need more depth than the cases I currently have so would appreciate any input.

cheers Dave

Hi Dave,

I have a couple of the ToolPro hard cases from Supercheap auto, they have the pick and pluck foam in them so the rifle can fit in there pretty snug. They can be locked with 2 padlocks and come with wheels. I saw plenty of other using them at the Canberra and Wagga Fly. They come in Black and Green and the Green ones are on sale here in NSW until Thursday so at just $150 they are hard to beat, normally about $220 but they come on sale about twice a year. I have a alluminium case as well and noticed the rifle had a large amount of condensation when I pulled it out at Wagga on the weekend. I think it had been sitting on a hot car on Sat and then it was a cool night, Sunday morning it was dripping wet - not seen this before. Our 2nd rifle was in a Toolpro case and sat in the same car etc and did not have any visible condensation on the barrel so I will be buying another very soon and retiring the metal case.

The Pelican and Storm cases are excellent of course but you need deeper pockets, maybe if I was flying with rifles all around the country I would invest the more expensive cases just for the piece of mind. I just use a couple of bike chains to chain them to the car and I keep bolts and ammo in separate locked box, again the Toolpro cases do the job. I have a small case for Rimfire ammo and a larger one to carry ammo for the cannon. Hope that helps, Dave Dundas.

@jetpilot Many thanks Dave and look forward to meeting you at Little River if you are attaending?  I didn't realise that ToolPro made the longer cases. Will have a look locally and see what is available. I think SCA have them down here.

Agree that the Pelican cases are now quite expensive. I have a couple that I bought years ago (1750) and were very reasonably priced then and have been excellent for the hunting rifles.

cheers Dave

Yes, Dave. My wife and I will be in Melb for the Nationals and will shoot all 3 classes this year, really looking forward to it. The Toolpro long case just comes in one size so check the length, also only the bigger SCA outlets carry all the cases in stock as they take up room. I saw they were on special (about 30% off) and dropped by my local store but they had sold out. See you in Melb. Cheers Dave Dundas

Well there you go!!

Didn't know about these cases! In what part of my anatomy has my head been?

Looks like they'll handle a 29" - maybe 30" barrel and at least a 3" forend!!

I better get a couple

I can definitely recommend the ToolPro cases Dave, we have two of them and they keep our guns nice and secure with plenty of room for bolts, cleaning rods and a few other bits and pieces.
